We checked out from the majestic International Hotel after our morning walk thru the morning market, and hired 2 yellow taxi for each one of us for Rs250, on reaching the Howrah train station, another porter again to carry our box into the station for Rs150. Our 2 boxes need to be sent as luggage for another Rs170. As the Indian train is very long,we need to make sure our boxes are inside the train and at the same time,we need to find our coach,it was not an easy task, if you are travelling solo on bike.We were told the train dun serve any foods, so we had our lunch and dinner in the foodplaza ,and cost bought some snacks and mineral waters to eat on such a long train journey. The Kalka Mail train arrived and leave sharp on time at 7.40pm. Our seat is a sleeper aircon ,with Chee and myself occupied both the lower beds,while there is no passenger taking the upper beds, the ticket cost Rs2285 per person from Kolkata-Kalka,a journey of 1743km with 38 halts and take approx 34 hr. We slept 2 nights in the train before finally reaching Kalka on 16 Jul at 7.30 am.
Our boxes were weaken by the rain and have to carry them carefully as not to further aggravate the torn parts. The train to Shimla touted as the Toy or Heritage Train took 5.30hr thru many tunnels and bridges up the mountains and reaches Shimla at 2200m in altitude. This mountain railway line was built during the British rule as a summer resort hill,more like our Frasher Hill in Malaysia.It was really an enjoyable ride to see the train slowly power up the mountain like a snake, the scenery view from the window was fantastic.i strongly recommend must try for those who wanted to come here.The train arrived in Shimla 2.30pm, The fee for the porter and taxi to our pre-booked hotel is Rs 300 each. Our Hotel Ganga is Rs1060 a room for 2, with free wifi, and hence i am able to post up my blog.
